Although this bit of news still remains to be a mere speculation, industry insiders feel that the six-foot-nine-inch power forward will return to the Oklahoma City Thunder for a short-term deal and become a free agent next summer.

But recent rumors suggest that the Los Angeles Lakers has an ace - or aces - up its sleeve which could sweeten up the deal with 27-year-old NBA All-Star: it is loaded with a huge cap space and is floating in assets.

With its current finances, It would therefore be a good idea for the Lakers to give in to Durant's supposed demands which include acquiring the services of a solid supporting cast.

There are suggestions that the Lakers trade for Chicago Bulls wingman Jimmy Buttler, and at the same time, take in Al Horford who is currently in free agency.

Having Butler and Horford under its wings will give LA a strong bargaining chip and could be the key in luring the prolific scorer into its fold.

In his latest column, sports analyst Bill Simmons broached the idea of Durant replacing Kobe Bryant as the face of the Lakers franchise, a development that could bring a huge smile to the faces of Nike executives.

"Durant returning to OKC won't help Nike in its holy war against Under Armour unless he wins a title," Simmons noted.

"But Kevin Durant building his own Eastern contender in Miami, Boston or Washington, or grabbing the torch from Kobe in Los Angeles for the Lakers?" he added.  "Now that would grab eyeballs and sell sneakers."
