The alternate ending for the series finale of "How I Met Your Mother" has found its way online before the September 23 release of the last season DVD boxset of the show.

With the new release, the series ends on a happier note.

In the first, official ending of the show, Ted Mosby's wife, Tracy McConnell, dies from a terminal disease. We later on find out that the reason why he is telling his kids the story of how he met their mother is because he wanted to ask their permission to ask Robin out on a date. The ending then features Ted, waiting outside Robin's house, carrying the iconic blue trumpet as Robin looks out from her window, smiling.

On the other hand, in the alternate ending, the mother played by Cristin Milioti, lives. In a montage, Ted remembers his past girlfriends and failed romances. His memories end with Robin marrying Barney and his eventual meeting with Tracy at the train station where the two argue over who owned the yellow umbrella. The last line draws a happily-ever-after tone with Bob Saget, Ted's older voice, saying"And that kids, is how I met your mother."

Deciding on which ending to choose was difficult, according to co-creator Carter Bays. 

13 million viewers tuned it to watch the two-part series finale.

The ending the creators eventually chose left viewers divided, with some even emotionally outraged about the choice. 

However, despite the mixed reactions and reviews, Bays took to Twitter to defend their choice, saying, "We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too."

The series ran for nine seasons and starred Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Jason Segal, Alyson Hannigan and Neil Patrick Harris. The show was nominated for an impressive 72 Emmy Awards and won 18.
