Based on the latest statistics report issued by global information company IHS, Google's digital media player Chromecast hais outselling the Apple TV.

The HIS report reveals that as of the end of 2015, more than 8.1 billion connected devices were being used around the globe. These devices include smartphones, personal computers, tablets, audio devices, TVs, and TV-attached devices.

The report revealed that as of the end of the first quarter of this year, Google has sold at least 3.2 million units of the Chromecast, making it Google's bestselling hardware to date. That figure nearly doubled the shipments made by the Apple TV, which stands at 1.7 million during the same period.

A Forbes report also claims that the Google Chromecast represents a 35 percent market share in the whole digital media streamers market in the third quarter of 2015. During the same period, Apple follows in second place with a 20 percent market share.

In a statement released along with the new statistics, IHS principal analyst for connected home Merrick Kingston said, "We anticipate that this reversal will persist. Since the introduction of the fourth-generation Apple TV, Apple and Google have pursued vastly different strategies."

One of the main reasons that Google's Chromecast beat Apple TV in sales was the difference in price. While the Apple TV retails at a price of $149, the Chromecast only costs $35. The latter is a more affordable option for consumers who want to stream their smartphone, tablet, or computer content to a television screen.

IHS added that the Google Chromecast's performance exceeded expectations, given that Amazon, one of the world's biggest online retailer, is not offering the device on its website.

Google is satisfied with the current sales numbers of its streaming device and the tech giant continues to be optimistic about its success in the future.
