German automaker Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the new G-Class SUV, a line of 4x4s originally engineered for military use.

Headlining the new G-Class line is the G550 4x4² which will hit showrooms this fall. Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz is yet to confirm whether the SUV will be released in North America. The squared part of the name refers to the new drivetrain which Mercedes-Benz promises will offer top of the line off-road abilities.

Beneath the sturdy appearance of the G550 4x4² is a robust frame which houses the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter gasoline-fueled V8 with seven-speed automatic transmission used in the standard G550. The powerful engine is capable of outputting up to 416 horsepower with 450 pound-feet of torque.

Aside from its powerful engine, the 4x4² also sports a wide-range of off-roading features which many car experts believe were borrowed from the AMG G63 6x6. The SUV comes with a portal axle which can raise the truck's driveline up and off the center of the wheels.

It also has a series of gears that can transfer the engine's power downward to the wheel hubs. With all these working together, the truck can be raised by up to 17 inches for ground clearance. This makes it eight inches taller than the standard G550.

To make the off-road experience complete, the G550 4x4² is equipped with off-road tires, adaptive suspensions with dual springs, dual stabilizer bars, damper struts, and adjustable shocks.

Inside the G550 4x4² is also built for passenger comfort. It has a lot of features integrated into the truck's roomy and very comfortable cabin.

Mercedes-Benz is yet to confirm exactly when the G550 4x4² will be released on the market. Experts are speculating that the main market for the truck are affluent car aficionados. The standard G550 4x4² will cost $219,000.
