World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), which is known for its scripted wrestling matches, is looking to ramp up its presence in the lucrative Chinese market as it aims to tap into the country's rising middle-class population.

In the latest move, WWE has signed a multiyear distribution agreement with PPTV, a leading Chinese digital video service. Under this agreement, WWE's popular shows Raw and SmackDown will be available for streaming in China only a few hours after airing in U.S. The shows will be streamed in Mandarin language to develop a deep connection with the Chinese audience.

WWE also plans to introduce Chinese wrestlers into its roster. Bin Wang, a 22-year-old professional wrestler from eastern China, will be the first ever contracted Chinese WWE wrestler. The company is hoping that the move to introduce local wrestling stars would further help in increasing its viewership in China.

In the past financial year, WWE earned $660m in revenue, with nearly 40 per cent of its revenue coming from live events and merchandise sales.

However, in a bid to increase revenue from its content, the American based entertainment company has been shifting its focus towards digital streaming. In 2014, WWE started streaming subscription service called WWE Network, which today boost fifth largest subscription base in the US.

George Barrios, WWE chief strategy and financial officer, has said that the company is planning to start its subscription streaming service in China by next year. Analysts say that WWE is now focusing on digital and social media service to close the revenue gap between domestic and international businesses.
