LG is currently developing a new smartphone that allows magnetic resonance wireless charging and will likely make the technology available soon.

The current smartphones that support magnetic induction wireless charging must have contact with a charging unit. When it comes to magnetic resonance-based wireless charging functionality, contact is not necessary, since this smartphone can be at a distance from the charger. The power used for its wireless charging is radiated from a transmitter.

A distance of seven centimeters (approximately 2.75 inches) should be maintained from the wireless charging unit or charging pad to charge LG's new smartphone. The battery of the smartphone will attain full charge with close to an hour of uninterrupted charging. Its rate in charging is expected to be 7 Watts, which is more powerful and faster than an average smartphone charger.

Magnetic resonance wireless charging has many advantages. One is that in a limited space like a crowded desk at the workplace, you can just place your smartphone on your neighbor's desk while the charging plate is on the wall. Another is the ability to charge a handset even when it is in your pocket.

The upcoming LG Pay Smart Card will also support the magnetic resonance style of charging. There are no announcements yet regarding the design of the handset or when it will be launched.

LG will ditch the Qi wireless charging option if this new technology turns out to be a success.
