A Dutch designer has created the world's largest air purifier that not only removes pollutants and cleans air but also turns smog into jewelry. The Smog Free project, which is scheduled to begin in Beijing, China, this September will help address the country's growing smog problem, which is said to kill nearly 4,000 people a day.

The project, which is designed by Daan Roosegaarde, includes a plan to create a 23-foot tall air purifier called the Smog Free Tower. Similar to a vacuum pump, the device will suck smog from its top and release the filtered air through its six-sided vents, the Business Insider reported.

The initiative, which was funded on Kickstarter, could clean over 30,000 cubic meters of air per hour while only being powered by 1,400 watts of green energy.

According to BGR, its ion technology can attract even small pollutant particles such as PM2.5 and PM10 and release clean air. After the tower finishes cleaning the air, the surrounding is said to be 75 percent cleaner.

It took Roosegaarde and his team nearly three years to develop the device. They are now collaborating with China's Ministry of Environmental Protection to move the Smog Free Tower across various Chinese cities.

"But I believe that creating a place where people can live, where they can feel the difference, smell the difference - that is a very powerful motivator," he told CNN. "I hope that the designs I make will be part of a mentality change."

Roosegaarde also plans to take the tower to other locations including Mexico, Paris, and Los Angeles.
