"This is a matter of concern. Our border has been peaceful. We have asked to increase vigilance. I am sure the central government will take cognizance of the issue," Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat said.

Rawat added that he was relieved that Chinese troops did not touch an important canal during the intrusion. The intrusion is reported to have taken place in Chamoli District, located in the interior of Uttarakhand state.

Commenting on reports of intrusion, Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said, "We will seek a report. We need to see how deep into our territory they came."

The Indian state of Uttarakhand shares a 350 km border with China. Both Asian powerhouses also share a border in Arunachal Pradesh in the east and Ladhak region in the west.

According to NDTV, Chinese armies have intruded in Uttarakhand region in past as well, including aerial transgressions carried out in 2013.

The report of Chinese troops intrusion in Uttarakhand comes at a time when India-China are going through a difficult period. Earlier this month, reports emerged that India had deployed 100 tanks to the Ladhak border. The move was criticized by Chinese state media, warning that it could have grave implication on Chinese investment into India's economy.
