(Photo : Reuters) Baidu is developing an in-house smart marketing platform.
Baidu is widely hailed as China's Google, and just like its counterpart in the United States, the company is also banking on its big data business to help curb online fraud. Recently, Baidu announced that it is planning to release its sales indices that will point out some fraudulent claims regarding box office figures in China.

Baidu claims that it was able to create a comprehensive database that includes more than 25 location requests, query data, user location, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Through this massive collection of data, Baidu said that it was able to actively track the exact number of people that are actually watching movies in theaters, according to Tech Node.
Regarding box office records in China, there are claims that movie producers buy out shows to create hype around their films, according to China Film Insider. This, in turn, could boost popularity and ticket sales. However, Baidu claims that it was able to track real time data to verify the actual number of people that are watching certain films in theaters.
In a demonstration of its research, Baidu revealed to the media that the massive box-office record set by "Monster Hunt" was achieved by setting up fraudulent screenings to inflate the film's box office revenue.
Baidu said that its real-time data is a high-end technology that is able to detect instances of fraud before any other party. Baidu described this new technology "now-casting" instead of "forecasting" since it is able to predict real-time box office records, something that usually takes 24 hours to be compiled.
