The sinkhole, measuring 30 meters long, 20 meters wide, and nine-meter deep, opened up in the east central city of Zhengzhou, located in China's Henan province and might have been caused by heavy rainfall in the region.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the collapse might have been triggered by the disintegration of water pipelines located underneath the road due to the rain, according to local firefighters, The Straits Times reported.

What started out as nothing more than a minor crack in the road after heavy showers in the city on Monday night, became a small hole not long after and finally devoured a grass verge located beside it before pulling in the surrounding pavements.

A number of onlookers were standing dangerously close to the sinkhole and taking pictures as it started expanding, dragging in four people with it along with three vehicles.

A man and a woman were rescued from the sinkhole and video footage (below) of the rescue attempt shows a group of men pulling out the 36-year-old man out of the deep dark depths of the cavity using what appears to be rope. The search for the two missing persons, one of whom is believed to be a child, is still ongoing.
