Chinese Women’s National Volleyball Squad Registers First Victory at Rio 2016

The Chinese women's national volleyball team bounced back from an unexpected defeat to the Netherlands in the opening game to edge Italy in straight sets 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 on Monday at the ongoing 2016 Summer Olympics Games in Rio de Janeiro.

According to Xinhua, veteran spiker Zhu Ting led China with 12 points, including two aces. Twenty-nine-year-old middle blocker Xu Yunli also contributed 12 points and three blocks during the match, which lasted for one hour and 14 minutes.

Paola Ogechi Egonu, 17, had a game-high 22 points to lead Italy. However, she was the only player in the side to score in double figures. The Italians made 24 errors while China only had 12.

With the victory, the Asian powerhouse now has a 1-1 win-loss record in the Pool B. China will be playing Puerto Rico in the next game. The Puerto Ricans suffered their second defeat on Monday against Serbia.

"It won't be an easy game for us," China's head coach Lang Ping said, "We have so many young players and they played a lot up and downs in our first two games."

In the other matches on the same day, the United States got the better of the Netherlands to secure their second win in a Pool A match with a five-set victory 18-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 15-8. Team USA now has a perfect 2-0 win-loss record while the Netherlands dropped to 1-1.

Opposite hitter Kelly Murphy led four American players with double figures. The 26-year-old scored 18 points including 15 attacks and three blocked kills. Jordan Larson and Foluke Akinradewo had 15 points each, while Kimberly Hill added 14, China Daily Asia reported.

Also on Monday, Russia crushed South Korea with a 3-1 victory and host Brazil topped Argentina 25-16, 25-19, 25-11.
