Qualcomm Signs Deal With Oppo, Vivo

Tech giant Qualcomm has signed deals with two Chinese smartphone manufacturers, Vivo and Oppo. Vivo signed a deal with Qualcomm to use the latter's 3G and 4G technologies.

While Vivo and Oppo are not exactly the biggest smartphone manufacturers in China, the two companies have a combined manufacturing output of about 30 percent. The two companies are also experiencing significant growth in their sales despite the fact that the smartphone industry is experiencing a slump in sales.

During the second quarter of the year, Oppo became the world's fourth largest supplier of smartphones with 22.6 million units shipped for a 6.6 percent market share. During the same period in 2015, Oppo only holds a 2.8 percent market share.

Vivo recorded a 4.8 percent market share in the second quarter of the year with a total shipment of 16.4 million units. During the second quarter of 2015, Vivo only had a 2.7 percent market share.

According to Electronics Weekly, China is an important market for Qualcomm since half of the company's revenue comes from the country.

A market research report from IDC revealed that the market share of Oppo and Vivo grew to 153 and 124 percent, respectively, in the year ending in March. During the same period, smartphone giants like Samsung and Apple reported a significant drop in their market share, according to Tech Node.
