2016 Rio Games: China Loses to Spain, Suffers Second Olympic Women’s Basketball Defeat

The Chinese women's national basketball team suffered their second defeat at the ongoing 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after bowing to Spain 89-68 at the prestigious quadrennial sporting event on Wednesday.

With the loss, China has dropped to a 1-2 win-loss record. China lost to the dominant Canada in their opening game, succumbing to a 90-68 defeat. They made it to the winning column following their 101-64 triumph over Senegal on Monday.

According to China Daily, 26-year-old forward Shao Ting poured in a team-high 14 points for China, followed by 5-foot-11-inch tall guard Chen Xiaojia with 11 markers.

Torrens Alba scored a game-high 32 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Spaniards, while Ndour Astou and Romero Leticia finished with 21 points and 16 points, respectively.

"Our top-eight goal won't change. But the challenges ahead are big," Chinese veteran center Chen Nan said. The China team will play Serbia and the United States in their next two games.

According to China.org, the two sides were tied at 14-all before Chen Xiaojia and Sun Mengran connected with two-straight three-pointers to help China lead for 24-18. However, Romero retaliated and buried a 3-pointer to overtake 41-38 at the break.

Spain surged with a 12-4 charge in the third period and stunned the Chinese women with a 25-9 run in the final quarter to claim the victory.

In other games, Diana Taurasi scored her Olympic-best 25 points to help the United States beat Serbia 110-84.

Five American players scored in double figures as Breanna Stewart had 17 points, Tina Charles added 15, Angel McCoughtry grabbed 13, and Maya Moore scored 10.

Canada beat Senegal 68-58, clinching a spot in the quarter-finals. Canada led the fourth quarter by 15 but was narrowed to seven with 2:59 to go.

Kia Nurse scored 14 points, and Tamara Tatham added 13 points with eight rebounds to lead the Canadians, who joined the USA as the only two teams with a perfect 3-0 record in Group B.
