2016 Rio Games: USA Eliminates Chinese Women’s National Basketball Team to Advance Undefeated to the Quarterfinals

The United States Routed China with a 105-62 victory in the ongoing women's basketball tournament at the 2016 Rio Games on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals.

According to NBC Connecticut, 2012 WNBA MVP Tina Charles poured in 12 of her 18 points in the opening quarter as the Americans easily wrapped up their 46th consecutive victory in their quest for a sixth-straight Olympic gold medal. Charles outscored the Chinese squad by herself in the opening period as the US stormed China with a 32-9 lead.

The US team has not been beaten by China in the eight matches that they met in the Olympics. The United States have won all of its five matches in the group phase and are on a record scoring pace; they have won for the fourth time producing at least 100 points in five games played.

Two-time WNBA Defensive Player Brittney Griner also contributed 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds while Diana Taurasi made two three-pointers to add six points for the Americans. Taurasi is just six triples away from tying the Olympic record for most three-pointers made in a single tournament in the women's category.

China, who will not advance to quarterfinal round after losing a tiebreak to Serbia, only tasted victory against Senegal 101-64. According to China.org, Sun Mengran scored a team-high 16 points with team captain Lu Wen adding with 14 markers for the Chinese squad.

Tom Maher, whose contract with the Chinese national team will be due after the ongoing quadrennial sporting event, expressed satisfaction for what the team has accomplished.

"I'm very happy that we qualified. That was a hard path. After our loss in Asian Championship. The pressure became quite immense for us to qualify, we all felt that. We did a good job just to be here. Absolutely, we are a much better team," the veteran Australian coach said.
