Zhu Ting finished the match with a game-high 23 points, and Hui Ruoqi added 14, including three blocks and two aces.
With the loss, the Chinese team suffered their third loss of the Olympic tournament and dropped to fourth place in the pool with two wins and three losses.
"The United States is a very strong team," China's head coach Lang Ping said. "But I think we played pretty good. Despite the loss, I see the potentials of my players."
The United States will be facing Japan in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The Japanese national squad is currently ranked as world No. 5 by the FIVB.
China is scheduled to play the reigning back-to-back Olympic Games gold medal winners Brazil on the same day.
China, the current No. 2 team in the world, came out fiercely in the first set, Hui Ruoqi blocked Akinradewo for a two-point lead and the Chinese remained in front the rest of the set by a wide margin, Xinhua reported.
In the second set, the American team came back strongly. Akinradewo scored and gave the team a 5-2 lead, as the United States won the set easily. The US team had no trouble in taking the following two sets as they walk away with the sweet victory.
