Badminton News: P.V. Sindhu of India Beats Wang Yihan of China to Advance to the Semifinal Round in Rio

India's badminton star P.V. Sindhu continued her winning run after successfully staging another upset by beating Wang Yihan of China in their quarterfinal match to advance to the final four of the ongoing badminton tournament at the 2016 Rio Games on Tuesday.

According to India Today, Sindhu overpowered the second top-ranked female shuttler in the world with a spectacular 22-20, 21-19 hard-fought victory at the Barra Olympic Park Riocentro - Pavillion to earn her very first Olympic semifinal round ticket. The match lasted for 54 minutes.

With her victory over the Beijing-based Chinese badminton ace, the 21-year-old Sindhu, a native of Hyderabad, Telangana kept India's hope alive for another badminton medal in the prestigious quadrennial sporting event.

Sindhu is India's very first women's singles badminton player to ever win a medal at the World Championships. She took home the bronze in the 2013 BWF World Championships in Guangzhou, China and repeated her sterling performance in the following year at Copenhagen. Another victory in Rio would mean another career milestone for the current world No. 10.

Sindhu will be facing the world No. 6 Nozomi Okuhara of Japan on Thursday for a spot in the championship round of the women's singles event.

The 21-year-old Japanese badminton ace is the 2016 All England Open champion. Okuhara outplayed her compatriot world No. 12 Akane Yamaguchi in the quarterfinal round 11-21, 21-17, 21-10.

Meanwhile, on the match of the day, reigning women's singles world No. 1 Carolina Marin of Spain defeated Sung Ji Hyun of the South Korea to progress to the final four. The 23-year-old Spaniard scored a two-straight -set 21-12, 21-16 victory.

Marin is scheduled to face the defending Olympic champion and incumbent world No. 3 Li Xuerui of China in the semifinal round.
