Shanghai Shenhua climbed to the third spot of the current China top flight table after winning five of their last seven assignments, including three straight victories in their last three games. The team has overtaken Shanghai SIPG and Hebei China Fortune, who now occupies the fourth and fifth places respectively, in the overall standings.
The most recent victim of head coach Gregorio Manzano's squad are no less than the five straight defending champions Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao FC. Shenhua nipped the league leaders, 2-1, also at their home stadium last Saturday, as per Xinhuanet.
Former Seattle Sounders striker Obafemi Martins scored a brace to lead the team with assists coming from team captain Giovanni Moreno and defender Xiong Fei.
After Martins opened the scoring at the fifth minute, Evergrande striker Gao Lin managed to level the count at the 12th from a pass by South Korean defender Kim Young-gwon.
However, the Nigerian forward scored his second goal of the night with three minutes left before the break to grab back the lead for Shenhua. The goal proved to be the game-winner as both clubs went scoreless for the rest of the match.
Meanwhile, Liaoning Whowin held reeling contenders Hebei China Fortune FC to a 0-0 draw on the road at the Qinhuangdao Olympic Sports Center Stadium last Sunday to pull off a third straight unbeaten performance, via Soccerway.
Whowin defeated Shanghai SIPG, 3-1, then settled to a 2-2 draw with Tianjin Teda in the previous round to complete the three-game undefeated run.
Head coach Ma Lin's side is now at the 11th place in the overall standings, six points above the bottom three relegation area with nine games left in their current campaign.
The predicted result is a close 2-1 win for Shanghai Shenhua.
