"Nurse Jackie" Will End With Seventh Season

Showtime revealed on Wednesday that the upcoming seventh season of "Nurse Jackie" will be its last.

Taking to Twitter, the network posted, "#NurseJackie is working one last shift! Join us in celebrating and bidding farewell to the 7th & FINAL season in 2015."

Showtime president David Nevin also released a statement praising the show's lead Edie Falco for her portrayal of the titular role.

"She creates indelible characters and Nurse Jackie Peyton is no exception. I know this final season will bring her story to a close that will satisfy the every-growing number of loyal viewers who have been entranced, and, at times, appalled by Jackie through the years," Nevin said.

Nevin also thanked the rest of the cast for making the show the success it is today.

Falco had won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in the series.

Falco's co-star Meritt Wever, on the other hand, garnered a Supporting Actress recognition.

According to TV Guide, the show was given the go-signal for a seventh season last March. With actor Peter Facinelli having left the show, former "Monk" star and Emmy award-winning actor Tony Shalhoub was tapped to be part of the team.

Shalhoub is set to play the role of the kindly ER doctor, Bernard Prince. Prince will serve as Nurse Jackie's new support system and friend.

Falco once shared bout the camaraderie on set, "Writers, actors, anybody working on an ensemble-type thing, there are going to be some creaks in the beginning. It seems like there's tremendous potential in just letting things sort of breathe a little bit. It's tremendously important."

The sixth season of the show saw an average weekly viewership of 3.4 million, making it one of the top shows on a paid cable network.
