Taiwanese actor Eddie Peng, who has been known to play mostly romantic roles in his 14-year-long acting career, will be seen in a new avatar as he joins the cast of upcoming action thriller "Operation Mekong."
The 34-year-old star underwent training in weapons use and close quarters combat for the film in order to to play a daredevil government agent who takes on criminals in the notorious "Golden Triangle," which is one of Asia's biggest drug trafficking regions, according to China.org.

The Dante Lam-directed film, which is slated to hit theaters on Sept. 30, is a true story inspired by the Mekong Massacre, when two Cargo ships were attacked by a Myanmar drug-trafficking gang on a stretch of the Mekong River in October 2011, killing all 13 sailors on board.
During a promotional event for the upcoming film, Peng showed up in full costume, complete with military clothing and an automatic rifle, with co-star Zhang Hanyu. A 3-D trailer was also released at the event showing action-packed sequences from the film.
This isn't the first time Peng and the Hong Kong director are working together. The two have previously teamed up for "Unbreakable" and "Fore." "Lam is a demanding director and always wants the scene to be as close to reality as possible, Peng said at the event.
Peng added that the cast and crew had a difficult time shooting the film in Myanmar's heat due to presence of mosquitoes and snakes in the wild. "Honestly, it was the most risky and toughest environment that I've ever worked in," the actor said.
In addition to Peng and Zhanyu, the film also stars Chen Baoguo and rising star Feng Wenjuan.
