At least five environmental officials in China's northern city of Xi'an have been detained for tampering air quality monitoring equipment and falsifying results to avoid being fined, state-backed Xinhua News agency reported.

At least 17,000 polluting companies have been shutdown in China and 28,600 enterprises were ordered to suspend operation following a nine-month intensified pollution inspection by the Chinese government, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has announced.

Beijing's air pollution has gotten so bad this week that city officials have told school children to stay indoors. The capital has been on "orange alert" since Sunday due to the air pollution, which is 3,500 percent above the World Health Organization (WHO) safety standards.

Beijing is given 10 percent of the 10 billion yuan fund allocation in key industrial zones to reduce air pollution in China after the Air Quality Index reached critical levels last Friday. This is twice the budget set in 2013 at 700 million yuan, the Ministry of Finance reported.
