China's coal consumption declined for the third consecutive year in 2016 in yet another sign that the world's most populous nation is getting serious on its fight against air pollution. The decades of overdependence on coal has made China one of the highest emitters of carbon dioxide and also one of the worst air polluters in the world.

A new analysis via the Greenpeace Energy Desk says that China’s carbon emissions may have fallen 5% in the first four months of 2015. As compared to last year, the country’s coal use reportedly fell almost 8 percent compared to the same period last year, in fact the reduction in emissions is so huge that it is measured to be approximately equal to the total carbon dioxide emissions of the U.K. over the same period.

Analysts said that while China's efforts to shift from the heavy-polluting coal energy to cleaner sources of fuel and power are laudable, at least US $21 billion worth of investments in coal stands at risk of being stranded, a recent research report estimated.
