Beijing Enforces Public Indoor Smoking Ban, Shanghai and Other Cities May Follow Suit

Since the beginning of the week, residents of Beijing have been subjected to a strick ban on smoking in all public indoor places. Some pundits have noted that the ban could easily be extended to other parts of the country as Chinese authorities try to cut down health care costs associated with smoking.

State-run monopoly China National Tobacco Corp. produced 2.5 trillion cigarettes last year for the nation's 365 million smokers.

China has a major health crisis with 365 million smokers, but one state-run Chinese company doesn't mind that number at all. The China National Tobacco Corp. has a monopoly in the China market enabling it to produce more than one-third of the world's cigarettes including more than 40 percent of all tobacco sold worldwide.
