The percentage of smokers who support the latest ban on smoking in China's capital city has reduced significantly since the directive came into effect about four months ago, according to a recent study.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged China to increase tobacco taxes and prices as a tried, tested and cost-effective way to save lives and reduce the disturbing high rate of cigarette smoking in the country. At least 1 million people in China are believed to lose their lives to tobacco-related illnesses every year.

Since the beginning of the week, residents of Beijing have been subjected to a strick ban on smoking in all public indoor places. Some pundits have noted that the ban could easily be extended to other parts of the country as Chinese authorities try to cut down health care costs associated with smoking.

Nearly 1.1 billion Chinese people are either smoking or are exposed to secondhand smoke, prompting the government to consider a ban on all forms of tobacco advertising in the country, the Tobacco Control Office of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.
