China is backing the commercialization of genetically modified soybeans over the next five years, as it attempts to improve its agriculture industry by increasing crop output as the top soy importer and consumer of the world.

On Aug. 20, 2014, Chinese Ministry of Agriculture official ditched research permits for genetically modified organisms, GMOs, in two rice and one corn varieties. While officials didn't give a reason for not renewing the 5-year certificate, this effectively stops GMO rice research in China.
