G7 Leaders Issue Strong Statement on South China Sea, China Says it is 'Immensely Disappointed'

On Friday, the last day of the G7 Summit, the participating leaders issued a strong statement on the dispute in the South and East China Seas. Although no country was specifically mentioned, the statement is apparently directed towards China.

In clear defiance of China's demands, G7 leaders on Thursday discussed the contentious issues of South China Sea and East China Sea, which has escalated tensions in Western Pacific region. The discussion was initiated by Japan, who rejected China's request that the maritime territorial disputes are not discussed at the G7 Summit.

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday that he hopes G7 leaders will avoid escalating tension in the region by focusing on economic issues. Beijing's remark is seen as a veiled warning to G7 leaders to refrain from discussing the South China Sea and East China Sea dispute at the ongoing G7 Summit in Japan.
