United States President Barack Obama revealed that opening the Guantanamo Bay, or Gitmo, in Cuba when he first took office is one of his biggest regrets in his term.

The U.S. Navy announced on Thursday the relief of the commander of the Naval Station Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, Captain John Nettleton, over an alleged illicit love affair. The navy cited loss of confidence on Nettleton who has supervised the station since June 29, 2012.

Uruguay has accepted six men detained at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba for 12 years. Although the six are suspected to having ties with al-Qaeda, they have never been charged. Since 2010, they were cleared for release, but the six could not be sent back to their home countries and it was difficult to find another nation willing to take them in.

The U.S. stepped up its security at its embassies ahead of the release of the Senate’s report on the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)’s report on harsh interrogations, fearing it could trigger protests in countries where the agency operated secret interrogation prisons.
