Pro-democracy lawmakers in Hong Kong's legislature have voted against a proposed electoral reform - backed by Beijing - that would have allowed voters to appoint their next Chief Executive and Legislative Council. Last year, thousands of protesters thronged to the streets to express their disapproval for the electoral proposal, but China's government did not make any concessions. Now, shortly after lawmakers in Hong Kong vetoed the bill, the National People's Congress (NPC) has declared that it will continue to uphold the proposal as the roadmap to universal suffrage in the island.

Nine bomb-making suspects have been apprehended in a raid on Sunday, June 14 at the Sai Kung district. Hong Kong police are currently keeping security tight in the island as legislators will decide in a matter of days on whether or not to approve a pro-Beijing electoral proposal, according to Yahoo.
