China’s July holding of US treasuries has been reported at the lowest level since 2013. Its holding has decreased for a fourth straight month. China is the biggest US creditor and the US government owes it $1.219 trillion of debt as in July. Japan held $1.155 trillion worth of Treasuries as it retained its position as the second-biggest holder of the bonds.

Japan is looking to increase its presence in the South China Sea. The country has announced that it would be joining the US training patrol in the contested region. Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada said that Japan would conduct similar exercises with regional navies as well.

China has expressed its concern over Japan's decision to sell search and rescue aircraft to India at a low cost. Japan and India have agreed to the sale of $1.6 billion worth of Shinmaywa US-2+ search and rescue aircraft. The sale would be made at a reduced rate to strengthen security ties between the countries.
