UNHCR Reports Rise in Migrant Deaths Trying to Cross Mediterranean Sea

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that in 2014, about 3,500 migrants, out of the 218,000 who attempted, perished while sailing to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.

Three rubber boats carrying refugees from North Africa to the Italian island of Lampedusa were reported missing and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) believe an estimated 300 people have drowned.
