Owing to the earth's slow-down in rotation rate, NASA has announced that it will be adding one second to the clock. What seems like a minor change is expected to bring a major chaos across technology and industrial domains including airlines

June 30 will be longer than usual as leap second will occur. In order to ensure time stays in sync with the Earth’s rotation, which is slowing down since the ocean tides are moving ahead of it, leap seconds are added once in a while to world time to significantly pull them back into proper alignment.

This year, June will be a second longer. This is according to Tuesday's announcement by the IERS (International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems). According to the IERS, the "leap second" will account for the discrepancy between the atomic clock and Earth's rotation.
