NASA's infamous spacecraft, Messenger which crash landed onto Mercury's surface on April 30 has sent reports which indicate that the planet possesses the oldest magnetic field in the history of the Solar System. The spacecraft which orbited Mercury right from 2011 to 2015 but it wasn't until the final months of the mission in which it became dangerously close to the Mercury's surface at 60 miles, that this report was sent.

Scientists have discovered that Mercury had a much stronger magnetic field nearly 4 billion years ago after studying rocks on the surface of Mercury from the data of NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft.
