China Suspends Importation of Coal From North Korea for 3 Weeks

China on Saturday imposed a three-week suspension on coal imports from North Korea, in accordance with the latest United Nations (UN) sanctions against the isolated communist state.

The United States and China have agreed to impose a new set of UN sanctions on North Korea in response to Pyongyang's fourth nuclear test in September. The nuclear test was apparently the most powerful conducted by the isolated communist country till date.

China's state-run People's Daily has, in an opinion piece in the Xiakedao column, compared the instability in the Korean peninsula with the political turmoil in Syria, noting that North Korea has become an increasing threat to China.
