The US government has begun a massive program to rewrite its naval strategy in the Asia-Pacific in response to China's rapidly growing naval presence in the region.

China has accused the American government on Friday of supporting the Philippines in an ongoing South China Sea arbitration in the Hague. Beijing's reaction was prompted by the comment of American State Undersecretary Daniel Russel that both claimants should respect and follow the decision of the arbitration body.

The Philippine government announced on Sunday that international support for its South China Sea claims was further bolstered by a recent American surveillance sortie headed by Admiral Scott Swift, head of the US naval fleet in the Pacific.
