She won her first WTA tournament in Nürnberg, reached the semifinals of the Australian and the French Open, defeated top seeds to enter her first grand slam final at Wimbledon, and qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore. The Canadian, however, hit a slump this year and fell in the rankings. From opening the year at no. 7 in the world, the Montreal resident slipped to no. 26 after her first round loss at Wimbledon.

Maria Sharapova entered the grass court season ranked no. 4 in the world but the Russian is back on a familiar spot as world no. 2 after her stellar performance at Wimbledon. The 28-year-old is in her 159th week of being second in the world and 180th week overall as a Top 2-21 player.
