Sydney Siege Leads U.S. State Department to Issue Worldwide Travel Alert

Even if there are no specific threats against U.S. citizens who are traveling overseas, the U.S. Department of State nevertheless issued on Friday a worldwide travel alert. The reason behind the warning is the Sydney Siege which resulted in the death of two Australians.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has described the gunman responsible for the deadly Sydney siege as a "madman", and conceded systems to monitor and prevent the attack were not adequate.

The gunman killed along with two of his hostages at the end of a 16-hour standoff in a Sydney chocolate cafe had been charged as an accessory in his ex-wife's murder in 2013 and was out on bail.

Police stormed the Lindt Cafe on Sydney's commercial center early Tuesday, and killed the Islamist gunman who had held at least 17 hostages for almost 17 hours. Unfortunately, two of the hostages also reportedly died in the siege.
