Tianjin Death Toll Climbs to 144, Residents Demand Compensation from Government

Chinese authorities on Monday confirmed that the number of deaths from the Tianjin explosion has now reached 114 while around 70 persons are still unaccounted for. Meanwhile, residents of nearby apartment complexes have staged a rally demanding compensation from the government for the damages of their homes.

Chinese authorities have assured Tianjin residents that the air and seawater in the city has not been contaminated by dangerous chemicals after a large warehouse filled with hazardous chemicals blew up on Wednesday.

Chinese authorities said that the death toll of the Tianjin port blast has reached 50 people. Investigators are yet to pinpoint the cause of the incident on Thursday evening. Firefighters were already at the scene putting out the fire when the explosions occurred.

At least 17 people have lost their lives and up to 400 others have been injured following two huge explosions on Wednesday evening at a port in Tianjin Province. Government-run press have reported that combustible materials stored in the industrial section of the port triggered the accident.
