Guangzhou R&F had been winless in three of their last four matches but the team managed to stay at the sixth spot of the China top flight table. They are now eight points behind third-placed squad Shanghai Shenhua, who is also temporarily holding the third and last AFC Champions League berth for the next season.
Guangzhou is coming off a high-scoring 5-4 victory over middling team Chongqing Lifan at the Chongqing Olympic Sports Center on Aug. 21 to snap their three-game winless skid, Cri English reported.
The scoring started with an own goal from Chongqing import Alan Kardec at the eighth minute, but the hosts erased the deficit by scoring two straight goals of their own at the 15th and 42nd courtesy of Wu Qing and Fernandinho.
The Blue Lions then started the second half with two goals from Xiao Zhi and Eran Zahavi at the 48th and 55th to make it a 3-2 count, but Ding Jie leveled it to 3-3 at the 59th.
Striker Xiao Zhi then gave the lead back to Guangzhou at the 71st but Kardec scored a legitimate goal for his side to equalize again at the 73rd. Finally, Chen Zhizhao netted the winner at the 87th to give the win to the visitors.
Meanwhile, Shenhua is currently on a four-game winning streak to keep their third spot in the overall standings following a 2-1 nipping of Liaoning Whowin at the Hongkou Stadium on Aug. 20, as per Xinhuanet.
Liaoning netted the opening goal at the 28th with a strike from Australian defender Michael Thwaite.
However, the Flower of Shanghai scored the next two goals, courtesy of team captain Giovanni Moreno and striker Obafemi Martins at the 43rd and 80th minutes respectively, to complete the come-from-behind victory.
