Fan Bingbing's 'I Am Not Madame Bovary' Wins Top Prize in San Sebastian Film Festival

Satirical Chinese comedy film I Am Not Madame Bovary snatched the San Sebastian International Film Festival's top prize, the Golden Shell, Saturday night. Chinese star Fan Bingbing also earned the Silver Shell in San Sebastian for best actress. 

"My birthday was the day of the inauguration of the festival and I made a wish, but I could never have guessed that at the end of the festival I would have received this prize. Thank you so much to the festival," Bingbing said during the ceremony.

Written by Feng Xiaogang, I Am Not Madame Bovary talks about a cafe proprietor, played by Fan Bingbing, who spends a decade peititioning the Chinese legal system to restore her honor after being swindled by her ex-husband, the Gulf News reported.

Earlier this month, the movie also claimed the International Federation of Film Critics' prize at the Toronto Film Festival, with the jury commending "its ambitious rendering of a woman's Kafkaesque struggle as she takes on the Chinese legal system."

Meanwhile, Korean director Hong Sang-soo also grabbed the best director award for Yourself and Yours, according to The Hollywood Reported.

Ken Loach's Palme d'Or winner I, Daniel Blake bagged the Audience Award. On the other hand, Eduard Fernandez was awarded with the Silver Shell for best actor for his role in Smoke and Mirrors. And the Best Screenplay award went to Spanish thriller May God Save Us.

The 64th edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival was held in the northern Spanish seaside resort. There were 17 film competitors hailing from across the world including Argentina, Britain, Chile, China, France, Iceland, Japan, Poland, South Korea, Spain, and Sweden.
