Alibaba has hired former McKinsey and Goldman Sachs executive Madhur Deep to lead its strategy and investment team in India.

Deep will be the senior vice president of the team, which handles market entry, investments, and partnerships for both B2B and consumer-focused commerce businesses of Alibaba Group in India, ET Tech reported. Currently, the Chinese e-commerce giant is focusing on developing brand recall in the Indian market, which is essential for the growth of the company. In addition, Alibaba is working closely with big logistic firms and is hunting for office space in Bengaluru.

“Alibaba needs to catch up with Flipkart and Amazon, or people will just rule them out of the game in India. Anyway, India is much different from China in terms of market conditions and that's soon being realized by investors. Also, Alibaba has been actively talking to a lot of companies but trying to scout for lower valuations. It's a double-edged sword,” a person who is familiar with company's plans said.

K. Guru Gowrappan, the Global Managing Director at the Alibaba Group, will be Deep’s immediate superior.

Deep was former Senior Engagement Manager at McKinsey, providing advice and helping other chief executives from digital, media and IT industry to reach their strategic and operational aspirations. Other companies he has worked with includes Delloite and ITC.

Deep is an excellent choice for Alibaba when it comes to consulting and developing strategies, according to The Tech Portal. He is expected to help Alibaba to understand the mindset of the Indian masses. Deep will also make sure that the strategies will be deployed properly to amplify Alibaba's business in India.
