Netgear recently unveiled the Nighthawk X10 router, the fastest in the world according to the company.

As Internet performance continues to improve, networking companies are working on how to deliver such breakneck speed through the Wi-Fi channel.

The Netgear Nighthawk X10 router is a quad-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz that supports Quad Stream Wave 2 Wi-Fi architecture, which helps the router advance to 7.2Gbps. It also supports the latest 802.11ad standard.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of the Netgear Nighthawk X10 is its Plex Media support, which allows users to turn any USB 3.0 flash drive or hard disk drive into a server without the need to use a computer.

Previous models of the Netgear Nighthawk series have USB ports onboard.

According to Engadget, the Nighthawk X10 is the first model to support Plex Media firmware in its app, which allows users to set up any connected drives as a server. Netgear revealed that there is no limit to the size of the storage medium that users can attach.

Another interesting software perk of the Nighthawk X10 is the new mobile support for OpenVPN. This allows users to connect into their home network even if they are abroad.

With all these nifty features, the Netgear Nighthawk X10 router does come with a hefty price tag of $500.

Netgear explained that the new model of the Nighthawk router is essentially a mini PC rather than just a plain router. While the price might be a hurdle for some users, Netgear is convinced that the router will no doubt appeal to enthusiasts and high-end users.
