Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has unveiled a new concept phone that promises bezel-less, edge-to-edge display. Dubbed as the Xiaomi Mi MIX, the device has a massive 6.4-inch edge-to-edge display with a resolution of 1080p.

Unlike some smartphones that use an optical illusion trick to create that bezel-less effect, Xiaomi was able to achieve to achieve a full edge-to-edge display without employing old-school tricks.

According to Engadget, the Xiaomi Mi MIX also features quite a unique design cue with the earpiece and the infrared proximity sensor removed from the top part of the device to create the famed edge-to-edge display. The display covers an impressive 91.3 percent of the available surface space.

Replacing the earpiece and the infrared proximity sensor is a cantilevered piezoelectric actuator hidden behind the glass which can produce audible sounds for making phone calls. The Mi MIX also features ultrasound technology to replace the proximity sensor, a first for smartphones.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX is tagged as a flagship device, and as expected the phone also has a flagship-grade hardware specs. At the heart of the Mi MIX is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset with a quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz. The phone is available in two models depending on its memory: either 4GB or 6GB of LPDDR4 memory module. Storage space also comes in two variants: 128GB or 256GB.

Powering the device is a massive 4400mAh battery pack with Quick Charge 3.0 support. It has a fingerprint scanner, an NFC sensor, and supports HD audio playback. The Mi MIX has a 16-megapixel main camera and a custom-made 5-megapixel front facing camera which Xiaomi claims is half the size of conventional sensors.

The base model of the Xiaomi Mi MIX is expected to have a price tag of around $516. The premium model of the phone, which has an 18-karat gold rim surrounding the main camera and fingerprint scanner, is expected to have a price tag of around $590.
