In a statement, Ford Performance motorsports engineering manager Mark Rushbrook said, "The new Mustang is a global vehicle. Now, its growing fan base has a GT4 competition model to race and support around the globe."

The new Ford Mustang GT4 is based on the Shelby GT350R-C, the car that won the last season of the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge. Just like the car where is was based upon, the Mustang GT4 sports a modified version of the flat plane 5.2L V8 engine. The engine is housed within the high performance chassis with suspension features from Multimatic Motorsports.

The new Ford Mustang GT4 also sports an adjustable race-ready dampers, a new rear lower control arms, 18-inch wheels, and a new front and rear stabilizer system.

While the Mustang GT4 and Shelby GT350R-C might share a lot of key features, one obvious difference between the two cars is the transmission. The Shelby has a manual transmission, while the Mustang GT4 sports a 6-speed sequential transmission with paddle shifters.

Since the Ford Mustang GT4 was designed to meet FIA standards, the car comes with a roll cage, an antilock braking system controller, and a Motec data logging system.
