China’s Zhang Shuai Enters the Semifinal Round of the WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai Event

China's Zhang Shuai scored a two-straight-sets victory against Timea Babos of Hungary on Thursday to finish the round robin phase of the Camellia Group in thentop spot with two matches won in the ongoing 2016 Huajin Securities WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai at the state-of-the-art Hengqin International Tennis Center.

Zhang, who also won over Swiss Timea Bacsinszky without dropping a set with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory, defeated the 23-year-old Hungarian tennis ace with another two straight sets triumph.
Basing from the report of the TSX Files, the Tianjin-native scored a hard-earned 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win against the 13th-seeded Babos, who entered the tournament as an alternate player after Spanish Carla Suarez Navarro's withdrawal.
With the win, the 2016 Australian Open quarterfinalist secured her place in the semifinal round of the prestigious tennis event and guaranteed a first career finish inside the world's Top 25 best players.
"It's amazing because I never thought I could play this tournament, and now I'm in the semifinals," Zhang told the WTA Insider, as quoted in the organization's official website.
"I prepared a lot for this week, so I'm really happy." The current world No. 28, who wrapped the match in an hour- and- a-half, added.
China's Zhang Shuai, who entered the competition as a wildcard, is competing on her maiden year-ending Tour Championship event of the WTA, which features world-class tennis players ranking between No. 9 and No. 20, along with one wildcard. However, the Chinese tennis star enjoys having the home crowd at her back.
"They have so many people coming to watch me and that gives me motivation," the 27-year-old Zhang said. "Everything feels really good because I like playing in China."
The WTA Elite Trophy, which is on its second edition, offers 700 ranking points to the emerging winner of the tournament. It has total prize money of US$2.5 million and it started on Nov. 1 and it will conclude on Nov. 6.
