The Chinese was part of the Camellia Group, where she was paired against Timea Bacsinzky of the Switzerland on her opening match. The world No. 28 defeated the Swiss tennis ace with ease, scoring a 6-1, 6-1 straight-sets win to kick off her campaign in a high note.

Zhang got her second win in the round robin phase after a hard-fought victory against Hungarian tennis star Timea Babos with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 triumph on Thursday that secured her place in the semifinal round of the tournament and face the Czech tennis ace Petra Kvitova.

Kvitova,  who got her ticket to the final four after beating Roberta Vinci of Italy and Barbora Strycova in her two round robin matches, is a two-time winner of the Wimbledon, claiming the grand slam titles in the years 2011 and 2014. She currently ranks No.13 in the world and has won a total of 18 career singles title under her belt.

WTA said the upcoming semifinals showdown between the two professional tennis players will be their third official meeting, with both players having recorded one match each.

Kvitova defeated the 27-year-old Chinese player in Hobart, Australia in 2010 while Zhang got the better of the 26-year-old Czech tennis star two years ago in Rome, Italy.

Meanwhile, Britain's No. 1 Johanna Konta will take on Ukranian Elina Svitolina in their respective semifinal matchup.  It will be their second official outing against each other with Svitlolina winning their first matchup at the Eilat 2 in Israel three years ago.
