Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei recently announced the newest addition to its growing Mate 9 family. Joining the Huawei Mate 9, the Porsche Design Mate 9, and the Mate 9 Pro, is the new Huawei Mate 9 Lite.

Huawei had been releasing a Lite version for each of the company's flagship smartphones. As the name implies, the Lite version of the Mate 9 sports a cut-down version of the smartphone. While the Mate 9 and the Lite version do share a lot of external specs, much of the changes were made under the hood.

The Huawei Mate 9 Lite sports a 5.50-inch display with 1080p resolution, according to Slash Gear. The phone has the same display as the Mate 9 Pro and Porsche Design version. The Mate 9 Lite has a model that comes with 3GB of memory and 32GB of storage space. A slightly upgraded version sporting 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage space are also available. The Mate 9 Lite has a 3,340mAh battery pack, which is slightly underpowered compared with its premium counterparts.

Huawei made some major cutbacks with regard to the Mate 9 Lite's camera and chipset. According to Digital Trends, the Huawei Mate 9 Lite runs on the Kirin 655 chipset, which is considered as a mid-range component with an octa-core processor and max clock speed of 2.1GHz.

On the camera aspect, the Mate 9 Lite retains the dual-camera configuration of its more powerful version, but the sensor was downgraded to a 12-megapixel rear facing main camera and a 2-megapixel front facing sensor. As a comparison, the other Mate 9 models have a 20-megapixel rear facing camera and a 12-megapixel front facing sensor.

The Huawei Mate 9 Lite is currently exclusive to China and the company has yet to confirm whether it will roll out into the international market.
