According to the official website of the BWF, the nominees for the Male Player of the Year are the reigning world No.1 player, Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia; China's 2016 Summer Olympic Games gold medalist, Chen Long; Destination Dubai rankings top finisher, Jan Jorgensen of Denmark; Chinese Men's Doubles duo Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan; and the Malaysian pairing of Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong.
Lee, 34, won his third consecutive Olympic silver medal in Rio this year. The Malaysian badminton superstar also won World Superseries titles in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan.
He also claimed his second Asian crown this season and remained a formidable opponent in every tournament that he participated in. Lee entered the BWF World Superseries Finals as the eighth ranked player of the USD 1 million badminton event.
Chen won his first Olympic Games title in Rio de Janeiro last August and was a finalist in this year's Superseries Premier events in China and Malaysia. He currently remains as the world's second top-ranked men's singles player by the BWF.
Jorgensen recently won the BWF Thaihot China Open in Fuzhou last month to become the first non-Asian shuttler to ever claim the Superseries title and was among his country's heroes in Denmark's winning of its maiden Thomas Cup title. The 28-year-old Danish badminton ace finished the Indonesian Open and the Japan Open as the tournament's runner up.
Meanwhile, Japanese Nozomi Okuhara; Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand; Danes pair of Cristina Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl; and Japan's dynamic duo of Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi are the nominees for the BWF Female Player of the Year.
