The team behind the CyanogenMod mobile operating system announced on Saturday that it will be shutting down its operations by the end of the year. The startup added that it will close all services as well as nightly build on Dec. 31.
"The open source project and source code will remain available for anyone who wants to build CyanogenMod personally," Cyanogen said.

The shut down also means that smartphone running on the CyanogenMod OS will no longer receive updates. Moreover, the OS will be moved to the open-source CyanogenMod ROM, which is not a commercial operating system and is developed and maintained by a community of developers. Popular smartphones that run on the CyanogenMod OS are OnePlus One and Lenovo ZUK Z1, according to CNet.
Meanwhile, the CyanogenMod team, which has been working on the project for more than eight years, said that it is currently working on a new open-source Android-based project called Lineage, according to Slash Gear.
The recent news to cease operation came after a long company drama that included installing a new chief executive officer and laying off a large chunk of the work staff. Although CyanogenMod was initially billed as the operating system to topple Android, the OS ultimately ended up building Android modifications of hardware manufacturers.
Cyanogen was founded in 2013 with the aim of monetizing the already popular CyanogenMod. The company was formed by Steve "cyanogen" Kondik.
