ZTE has admitted that its crowdsourced smartphone Hawkeye is experiencing some failure and some key errors along the way.
After officially launching Hawkeye in Kickstarter earlier in January and unveiling the device’s midrange specs, ZTE’s VP of planning and partnerships Jeff Yee said that the company was not able to make the best decision in turning its crowdsourced phone idea into a midrange Android device.

In August 2016, ZTE has launched Project CSX, where users can suggest products that the company could build. The rules for the contest include originality and realism, but creators can use some imagination too. ZTE received 400 concepts, which would eventually be narrowed down to five for a final showdown vote. The winner of the crowdsourced phone features an adhesive back panel, allowing it to stick on any wall as well as eye-tracking software for hands-free use.
Yee explains that given that the phone has raised less than $35,000 of its $500,000 goal. ZTE’s Hawkeye is expected to be a mid-range Android device but supporters are not happy with it. Apparently, users wanted a top-tier Android device with the best Snapdragon processor.
However, the company cannot change the $199 price to make it a global device that will reach the masses around the world but the specs would need to be mid-range. The company says that the “introductory price” has already been set and backers have already pledged money for the phone.
“We realize that our decision to introduce the CSX hands-free features on a mid-range device may not have met the expectations of those that backed this project and those that are early adopters and discovering Project CSX through Kickstarter. It was our mistake,” Yee said in a blog post.
ZTE Hawkeye features Snapdragon 625 processor, and 3GB of RAM paired with 32GB of internal storage. It features 5.5-inch full-HD display, dual camera of 12MP and 13MP, and 8MP selfie camera. The device will run Android Nougat pack with 3000mAh battery with quick charging support, NFC, and a fingerprint sensor. Connectivity options are as follows: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, USB Type-C port, and a dual-SIM slot.
