Samsung's shift in focus intends to strengthen its overall software prowess and enhance its competitive edge in the "Internet of things (IoT)" industry, the company said.
It plans to increase synergies for its Tizen platform.
Last year, the company announced it had 40,500 software engineers working in its mobile division. Following
"It sounds like Samsung doesn't plan on going big with Tizen on its smartphones," said Song Myung-sup, an analyst of HI Investment & Securities in Seoul.
"The move will likely help resolve convergence issues that arise when connecting network devices like TVs and wearables with smartphones, but this shows less determination on Tizen smartphones."
The tech giant had been working on the Tizen operating system with other partners, including Intel.
Last June, Samsung revealed Tizen's smart interface was running on one of its curved screen TVs. In addition, the platform also works on wearables and smartphones.
The move is a step towards enabling smart devices to communicate with one another over the Internet.
Other companies such as China's Huawei have taken similar steps following its recent acquisition of UK IoT company, Neul.
