"We are very excited about the government's vision of a Digital India and the creation of smart cities." said Dinesh Malkani, president of SAARC.

Cisco designed the site for thousands of its employees to work and be educated in.

The new smart city will showcase new technology concepts for the "Internet of Things" (IoT), including smart buildings, smart work spaces and smart parking and transportation.

It highlights the intelligence and advantages of connected cities. It also aims to provide the country with universal phone, broadband and public internet connectivity.

As part of India's effort to digitize the nation, the smart city promotes electronic delivery of services and creates jobs.

"We believe that the Cisco Smart City is a great showcase of how the government can deliver governance and services to citizens digitally, build broadband highways, enable digital inclusion and deliver information for all." said Malkani.

The site follows the networking company's previous initiatives in Barcelona, Spain and Canberra, Australia.
